Photographer: Why the Photos Never Look the Same Twice<o:p></o:p></span></h1><p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 19.5pt; background-image: initial; background-position: initial; background-size: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; vertical-align: baseline;"><span style="font-family:" segoe="" ui","sans-serif""="">I have been
shooting in Cappadocia for the better part of a decade, and I still have not
taken the same photograph twice. The light here shifts by the hour. One morning
the valley is wrapped in low fog and the balloons rise through it like paper
lanterns. The next day the sky is perfectly clear and the landscape turns gold
before your eyes. That is the challenge and the reward of working as a
photographer in this part of Central Anatolia.</span><span style="font-size:

backdrop you simply stand in front of. The fairy chimneys, the cave dwellings,
the ridges of Rose Valley, and the sharp drop of Love Valley all demand that
you understand the direction of the light and the texture of the stone. A good
session here is not about posing someone on a random hill. It is about knowing
exactly which ridge catches the first sunbeam at six in the morning, or which
spot in Göreme stays shaded just long enough to give you soft, even light at
noon.<o:p></o:p></span></p><h2 style="margin: 18pt 0cm 12pt; line-height: 24pt; background-image: initial; background-position: initial; background-size: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; vertical-align: baseline; scrollbar-color: transparent transparent; font-variant-numeric: inherit; font-variant-east-asian: inherit; font-variant-alternates: inherit; font-variant-position: inherit; font-variant-emoji: inherit; font-stretch: inherit; font-optical-sizing: inherit; font-size-adjust: inherit; font-kerning: inherit; font-feature-settings: inherit; font-variation-settings: inherit; font-language-override: inherit; color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.9);"><span style="font-size:15.0pt;font-family:" segoe="" ui","sans-serif""="">What

contact me are not professional models. They are couples on their honeymoon,
solo travelers who want one good portrait for the year, or families who finally
managed to get everyone in the same country at the same time. My job is to make
the camera disappear so you can focus on the place and the person next to you.</span><span style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:" segoe="" ui","sans-serif""=""><o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 19.5pt; background-image: initial; background-position: initial; background-size: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; vertical-align: baseline;"><span style="font-family:" segoe="" ui","sans-serif""="">We start before
sunrise if you want the balloons. That means meeting in Göreme while it is
still dark, driving to a launch viewpoint, and being in position before the
first basket lifts off. The window is short. The best balloon light lasts about
forty-five minutes, and the sky is busiest between 6:00 and 7:30 AM depending
on the season. If you miss that window, you still get balloons, but you lose
the layered depth of color in the sky.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 19.5pt; background-image: initial; background-position: initial; background-size: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; vertical-align: baseline;"><span style="font-family:" segoe="" ui","sans-serif""="">If balloons are not
your priority, we can shoot at sunset from a ridge in Ürgüp or down in Pigeon
Valley. The rock faces turn terracotta and rose, and the crowd thins out
because most day-trippers have already left for dinner. That is when Cappadocia
feels the most private, even in the middle of summer.<o:p></o:p></span></p><h2 style="margin: 18pt 0cm 12pt; line-height: 24pt; background-image: initial; background-position: initial; background-size: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; vertical-align: baseline; scrollbar-color: transparent transparent; font-variant-numeric: inherit; font-variant-east-asian: inherit; font-variant-alternates: inherit; font-variant-position: inherit; font-variant-emoji: inherit; font-stretch: inherit; font-optical-sizing: inherit; font-size-adjust: inherit; font-kerning: inherit; font-feature-settings: inherit; font-variation-settings: inherit; font-language-override: inherit; color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.9);"><span style="font-size:15.0pt;font-family:" segoe="" ui","sans-serif""="">Locations

everyone wants to start, and for good reason. Hundreds of hot air balloons lift
from the valley floor against the eroded spires. I know a handful of elevated
spots that keep the scene in frame without putting twenty other photographers
in your background. We can also walk down into the valley itself for shots
among the baskets while they are inflating. The scale is unreal.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 19.5pt; background-image: initial; background-position: initial; background-size: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; vertical-align: baseline;"><strong style="scrollbar-color: transparent transparent;font-style:

the phallic rock formations, but the real draw for photography is the long

cuts straight through it. It works beautifully for walking shots and for
couples who want something cinematic rather than posed.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 19.5pt; background-image: initial; background-position: initial; background-size: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; vertical-align: baseline;"><strong style="scrollbar-color: transparent transparent;font-style:

connect just outside Göreme. The color in the stone actually changes as the sun
moves. Mid-morning the rock is pale pink. By late afternoon it deepens to rust
and ochre. There are hidden cave churches along the trail if you want to add a
historical texture to the shoot, and the paths are wide enough that we can move
without fighting through tour groups.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 19.5pt; background-image: initial; background-position: initial; background-size: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; vertical-align: baseline;"><strong style="scrollbar-color: transparent transparent;font-style:

highest point in Cappadocia. From the top you see the entire plateau stretching
toward Mount Erciyes. I use this spot for wide, environmental portraits. It is
especially effective for flying dress shoots because the fabric catches the
wind coming off the ridge and the background has real depth.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 19.5pt; background-image: initial; background-position: initial; background-size: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; vertical-align: baseline;"><strong style="scrollbar-color: transparent transparent;font-style:
